 Chrysalis News – January 19, 2012

Chrysalis Announcements:

Talent Show and Spring Camping Trip Dates
Last week’s newsletter had incorrect dates which caused confusion among careful readers.
The Talent Show will be on Thursday, May 24th.
The Spring Camping Trip is scheduled for June 1-3.  We are still looking at going to Monterey and we have reservations to tour the aquarium on Saturday, June 2nd at 10:15am. We have not yet decided as to whether May 31st will be a school day, a minimum day, or no school.

Snow Day?
Now that some winter weather has finally arrived, there is a possibility that we might have to cancel school because of a Snow Day. If we do, it will be announced via local radio so listen to the radio early in the morning if there is a question.

Tae Kwan Doe Elective Class Will Continue
Due to a college class cancellation, our parent teacher, Gary McRoberts will be able to teach Tae Kwan Doe during Friday electives as he has been doing.  He will not offer Tae Kwan Do during Project SHARE as reported in last week’s newsletter.  Thank you, Gary, for offering this popular class for our children.

Electives
Electives in January and February:
Ms. Cheri and Ms. Crystal’s classes: every Friday through February.
Ms. Emily’s class and older: electives will be held on Jan. 27; Feb. 3, 10. Electives will not be held on Jan. 20; Feb. 17, 24.

Fieldtrip for Independent Study Students
Our Independent study students have an opportunity to visit VCA Asher Animal Hospital with teacher Karen Shuster. Grades K-2 are scheduled to visit January 19th at 1:00pm. Grades 3-8 are scheduled for January 26th at 2:00pm.

Attention 8th Grade Students and Parents
There will be a Curriculum Fair at Foothill High School on Monday, January 23rd at 6:30pm. This is a time to meet teachers, get more information about classes, and WIN prizes. It is a good idea to get your high school plans made early!

Spring Electives
A new set of electives will begin on March 2nd. We seek parents to teach elective classes. More classes allow smaller, more personal classes. Teach something you are passionate about. This is a wonderful way to contribute to the school while sharing something you love and fulfilling parent hour requirements. If interested or want more information, contact Ms. Cheri for the younger grades and Ms. Karen for the older grades.  Deadline for letting us know is February 3rd.  Thank you.

Alysia will be conducting her next math class for parents on Feb. 9th at 6:30pm.  The following class will be on March 8th.

Chrysalis Talent Show
It is time to start getting ready for the 2012 Chrysalis Talent Show that will be held on May 24th. If you haven’t chosen what you’ll be doing for your act, it is time to do that and start rehearsing on your own time. Last year’s show was a tremendous success! Please turn in the form (below this announcement) and all applicable items to Ms. Cheri. There are some important deadlines and guidelines that you need to take note of.

  1. The form below along with a copy of the lyrics or any speaking parts that will be done need to be turned in to your teacher by March 14th. A copy of the lyrics for any music that will be used at all - dancing, singing, etc. is needed. The lyrics need to be appropriate for school.

  2. Students may perform in no more than 2 acts (an individual act and a group act). This may have to be limited to only 1 act if we have a large number of acts wanting to perform.
  3. Performances need to be no more than 3 minutes long. This helps keep the audience engaged in the performance. Please check the timing of your song or act because I am firm on the 3 minutes.
  4. Performers will audition for their teacher during the week of April 16th – 20th, so practice and be prepared.
  5. No lip-syncing.
  6. In addition to a copy of the lyrics due by 3/14; anyone that is using background music for singing, dancing or any other reason needs to have a copy of the background music CD to Ms. Cheri no later than Friday, March 23rd.If you are singing to music you need to find a karaoke version (background vocals only) of the song you will be singing.

Love & Logic:

Make Them Part of the Family
One of our basic human needs is to be needed and to be a part of a family.  When children live their lives as guests in a four star hotel instead of as a contributing member of a family, this basic need is denied.  The usual result is for them to feel increasingly resentful without knowing why.
One way to help a child feel needed, important, and valued in the family is to put him/her in charge of one family meal per week.  This means planning, cooking, serving, and cleaning up.  Most kids are capable of doing this by the time they are eight years old.
Of course the quality of the food will suffer temporarily while they are in training mode.  But this changes dramatically as they learn and become excited about being able to cook.
Many parents report to us that their kids resist at first, but soon think that they enjoy cooking.  In many cases, what the kids enjoy and don't recognize are the wonderful feelings of being valued.
